Wonderful Antebellum South Carolina Wallet of John A. Maxwell Signer of The South Carolina Ordnance of Secession

Our Price: sold

This is a most interesting relic of the Civil War being an Antebellum South Carolina embossed state seal wallet belonging to a noted South Carolinian John Anderson Maxwell (1791-1870). Maxwell signed the South Carolina Ordnance of Secession and he signed this wallet 3 times and dated it each time 1857, 1858 & 1859. The tax receipts inside are all dated 1864. There are two other inscriptions inside wallet which have faded with time, but could probably be discerned with a little patience. During the Civil War, Maxwell's brother, Robert, was a member of the South Carolina Senate. Condition is very good to fine as can be seen in photos. There was a contemporary repair made to strap. Signatures are very good and dark on wallet. Detached receipt sheet broken at fold.
