Burnside Breech-loading Carbine, 1862, serial number 24304, .54 caliber rifled round barrel with single-leaf rear sight, barrel marked "CAST=STEEL 1862," "c" and "P" behind the sight, breech marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MARCH 25TH 1856," tail of lock marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE=R.I.," front of trigger guard, internal breech parts and barrel band stamped "H," left side of breech, breech pivot pin and band spring marked "C," walnut stock with carved initials "EM," barrel lg. 20, overall lg. 39 1/4 in.
