1/6th Plate American Soldier Dag with Regulation Plate
Exceptional 1/6th-Plate Dag of a circa 1840's American Soldier. Measuring 2 ¾” by 3 ¼” this dag is much clearer in person, than my photographs show. This photo is clean and crisp and the background is all one color. The soldier, whose jacket is tinted blue with a white belt with gold gilded epaulets, buttons and buckle, has his sword in his lap, which is also accent in gold, and this soldier has red pants. Under magnification the cross-belt plate is identified as the regulation 1839 pattern with script letters 'US'. Also of note in this attractive early Daguerreotype is the exceptional Shako Hat that this soldier is holding in his right hand. The very large feathered top is tinted red white and blue. If you look closely at the brass hat medallion, you’ll see in American Eagle right in the middle. This medallion and the edges of the leather, are also gold gilded. I carefully removed this photograph from the case, and I found the remnants of the original paper seal around the outer edge. Quality, condition, and crispness of this photograph exceptional. Fresh to the market this exceptional antique American Soldier daguerreotype has never been in any collection before. The original case is also in very good condition, but does have separated paper hinge.
