J.M. Getman Chicago Aug. 18, 1861. American Express was started as an express mail business in Albany, New York, in 1850. It was founded as a joint stock corporation by the merger of the express companies owned by Henry Wells (Wells & Company), William Fargo (Livingston, Fargo & Company), and John Warren Butterfield (Wells, Butterfield & Company. American Express extended its reach nationwide by arranging affiliations with other express companies (including Wells Fargo – the replacement for the two former companies that merged to form American Express), railroads, and steamship companies. Also included is Getman's commission document issued by the Illinois State Militia appointing Getman 1st Lieutenant, Co. G, 42 IL Regiment, dated July 22, 1861, with a 42nd IL Officer's Hunting Horn Headgear Insignia attached to cover glass, 11 x 17 in., framed, 13 x 19 in.; and a document from the State of Illinois certifying that Getman was elected a member of the Illinois House of Representatives of the 36th General Assembly, 1st Senatorial District, dated 1888, 9.75 x 12 in., framed, 11.75 x 13.75 in. Listed as "Joseph N. Gitman" from Chicago in the Illinois Adjutant General's Report, this officer enlisted as 1st lieutenant of Company G. on July 22, 1861. He resigned on April 8, 1862. The regiment was then in the field engaged at Island No. 10. It is not known if Getman was with his regiment when he resigned. The Volunteer Roster lists the officer as "1st Lieutenant James M. Getman, Resigned April 8, 1862." The discrepancy cannot be accounted for. Getman went on to serve as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives during the late 19th century.
